Curing the Driver

Don't Cross That Line!

In an effort to generate more power and length in the swing, many golfers lift their right elbow at the completion of the backswing.  However, this "flying" right elbow often tilts the shaft of the golf club "across the line" or plane.  If you cross the plane, it is very difficult to get the club back on the proper plane prior to impact and you will suffer inconsistent contact and loss of power.  In other words, you are creating a zig-zag in your swing that requires too much timing.  If you "zig" off plane at the top, you will have to counter that move by doing a "zag" on the way down.  Good luck timing that!

To improve your position at the top of the backswing, place a Nerf football or sponge between your elbows.  When you swing to the top, your elbows should remain close together and the sponge should remain without falling.

Notice in photo 1 that my club is hidden behind hands and has not crossed the line.

In photo 2, the football is falling and the club has crossed the line at the top.

In addition to the Laser/Flashlight Drill, this is a great way to practice and improve your swing plane.

TESTIMONIALS
I have played golf for 30 years; the last 10 years as a 5 handicap. I have taken over 50 lessons with golf professionals. Half of these lessons used videos and computers. I am just now TRULY learning to play "The Greatest Game Ever Played" thanks to the Anne Cain Golf Academy. Prior to taking a lesson with Anne, I was concerned that her use of video and computer technology would be too technical and rob me of my "feel". I could not have been more mistaken! Anne combines this advanced equipment with her personal instruction skills and uniquely incorporates proper mechanics into your very own "feel". On a scale of 1 to 10, comparing Anne's instruction methods versus other instruction with video and computers, the other lessons ranked a 4 and Anne's lessons rank an 11!
